People often talk about “metabolism,” but it’s rarely measured directly. An RMR test measures your Resting Metabolic Rate — the number of calories your body uses each day at rest to power essential functions like breathing, circulation, temperature regulation, and basic cellular activity.
RMR is one of the most important baseline factors influencing body weight and body composition because it represents the largest portion of your daily energy expenditure for most people. Once we know your RMR, we can estimate your total daily energy needs more accurately and use that number to build a calorie target that matches your goal.
From a physiological standpoint, changes in body weight are primarily driven by energy balance:
- If you consistently consume less energy than you expend, weight loss occurs over time.
- If you consistently consume more energy than you expend, weight gain occurs over time.
The advantage of measuring RMR is simple: instead of relying on generic calculators and estimates, you get a personalised, objective starting point to guide nutrition planning for fat loss, muscle gain, or long-term weight maintenance.
RMR is measured using indirect calorimetry, a clinically accepted method that estimates energy expenditure from your breathing.
During the test, you’ll relax quietly while breathing through a mouthpiece (or mask) for approximately 12–14 minutes. The system analyses the air you breathe out to measure how much oxygen (O₂) your body is using and how much carbon dioxide (CO₂) it is producing. Because oxygen consumption is closely linked to energy production in the body, these measurements allow us to calculate your resting calorie burn with a high level of accuracy.
Once the test is complete, you’ll receive your measured RMR (calories/day). We then use this value as the foundation for setting an appropriate daily calorie target, whether your goal is fat loss, weight gain, or maintenance, rather than relying on generic estimates.
To obtain the most accurate measurement of your true resting metabolic rate, please follow the guidelines below:
- Fast for 4 hours before your appointment: no food or calorie-containing drinks. Water is fine.
- Avoid caffeine and other stimulants for 4 hours before the test: this includes tea, coffee, energy drinks, pre-workout supplements, and nicotine (including cigarettes/vapes).
- No exercise on the day of your test: training can elevate metabolic rate for several hours afterwards and may affect your result.
If you’re unsure whether something you’ve consumed or done could impact the test, let us know and we’ll advise you.
We require at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule without charge.
Cancellations within 24 hours or non-attendance (no-show) are charged at 100%.
If you have an unexpected issue, please use the link provided when you register to reschedule.
